This semester was going to kill him. Eli could have gone through college much faster if he hadn't wasted his first year or so shooting for a major that didn't quite suit him. Still, at least he found something that he enjoyed a great deal more. Classes had only just started, but Eli was already drowning in homework. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that he was already procrastinating.
With the sun fading outside, Eli was nearly finished and probably would have finished sooner had he not dozed off. Books were scattered on the table around him, his head resting on the open one in front of him. His pen was still resting lightly in his hand, his last written word having trailed off in a line of ink. His breathing was even and silent as he drifted off into one of his most disturbing, but unfortunately common nightmares...
"Can I pleaseeee?" he begged, watching his mother tuck Lelia into her bed. "No. It's almost your bedtime," she said, shaking her head and settling down next to Lelia to read to her, just as she did every other night. "You can watch the movie some other time." The twelve year old Eli wasn't going to give up so easily, he never did. "But Jimmy's mom is letting him stay up to watch it."
"Well I'm not Jimmy's mom." Opening up the night's bedtime story, Eli knew it was his mother's way of saying it was the end of their discussion. Not too happy about it he sat on the edge of his sister's bed, sulking. It wasn't long though before he was laying down by their feet, listening to the story.
It was just when he started to drift to sleep that he heard it, the faint sound of a crash downstairs. His mother's voice trailed off and she set the book face down so that she wouldn't lose her spot. The bang that followed wasn't exactly quiet and was accompanied by even more disturbing noises, the sound of ferocious growls among them. "Stay here," his mother urged them, slipping out of the bed and toward the door before looking back at them. "Stay with your sister." Before he could get a word out of his mouth, she had locked the door and shut it.
Eli sat up and watched her go before looking to Lelia who was just as frightened and confused as he was. The house shuddered beneath them, the light on the bedside table falling to the floor where it laid, still lit, on its side. Clearly scared out of their minds, brother and sister clung to each other, not knowing what to think.
Lelia was crying in his arms when the door came crashing down. A large man in black, laden with weapons turned right to them, probably ready to do his worst, when he suddenly burst into flames. Rushing into the room, his mother was bleeding, but didn't seem to care when she grabbed her children in the most relieved embrace he had ever witnessed. "Come on," she said to them, ushering them out of the room. The smell of burnt flesh was strong in the air, many of the decorations in the hallway smashed and scattered about.
The scene was a gruesome one. As they were being rushed to the back door, he could hear the sound of a man groaning, and trying to regain himself. Eli would have run right with his mother, had he not caught the sight of his father, lifeless, out of the corner of his eye. Frozen in place, he could barely understand his mother's frantic words as she forced him through the door. The next thing he knew, he was running.
"GO," their mother urged them as they reached the edge of the woods, looking back at the man who was following them. "I'll catch up to you, I promise, now GO!" Grabbing his sister's hand, Eli did just that, dragging his reluctant, sobbing sister behind him. The sound of a gunshot burst through the otherwise calm autumn night-"
Jolting awake, it took a moment for Eli to remember where he was and that he wasn't running through the woods. His breathing was heavy, as if he had been running, and sweat beaded his brow. "Crap," he said, looking at his watch and trying to blink the weariness out of his eyes. The library was much darker than it had been, the moon shining in through the window. The light on his table was one of the few that was still on. Shoving his books into his backpack, Eli stopped for a moment, sensing someone nearby...
